We're here in God's country, as Jeff would say. The RV is taking a break out front of the Dean residence in Boone County, West Virginia. We'll be here for two nights, and then it's six hours to home.
This morning, after I visited the Louisville airport for work, we visited Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. They have a nice museum and we were able to take a tour of the racetrack. It's really beautiful, and now Jeff says he wants to go to the Derby next year. We also got off the interstate for a bit to drive by some of the horse farms. Lots of beautiful homes, rolling hills and gorgeous horses. (I'll be posting pictures tomorrow.)
We really enjoyed the Louisville, Kentucky campground. It was pretty big, and had all the amenities the kids love: mini-golf, a pool, a playground, a jumping pillow and banana bikes. I had a pleasant conversation with the lady at checkout - she was not what I expected at a for a woman working at a Kentucky campground. Her name was Jersey, and she had a non-southern accented, two pack a day husky voice.
We got to Louisville late in the day, and while we wanted to check out the city, we decided a better plan might be to let the kids enjoy the campground and have one final cookout and campfire.
Dinner consisted of the odds and ends that were still in the fridge and cabinets: hot dogs, two sirloin steaks, roasted red potatoes, and carrots with ranch dip. After dinner, we got out the last bag of marshmallows and roasted a bunch. Henry, who doesn't like marshmallows, roasted some for me and ate some plain ones himself.
Despite having no kindling and very little newspaper, I got a pretty good fire going. I highly recommend Coleman's fire started sticks - I found them at Walmart in the camping section and they've been good to me the entire trip. They light like a match, and when the whole stick is in flames, you put the coals over them and it gets them going. For a fire, you stick one or two in between logs and light them, and they'll get the logs going.
We pulled out a notebook and divided a page into four sections for each of us, and started thinking of our "Top Ten" for the trip. We each gave the others some ideas, and when we have the list finished, we'll post it here on the blog.
After having been cloudy all day, it finally started to drizzle, so we headed inside. The kids were tired from jumping on the jumping pillow and swimming, so it didn't take long for them to go to sleep.
